This collaboration between award-winning composer Derek Bermel and librettist Wendy S. Walters celebrates the history of our great city, from its beginnings as a small town in the wilderness through its exciting and tumultuous industrial decades. With nods to Pittsburgh’s rich jazz history, this new oratorio explores themes of progress, depression and re-growth through arresting tonal harmonies and text inspired by the American immigrant experience and the stories of generations of Pittsburghers. You won’t want to miss this exciting hometown world premiere!
World-renowned conductor Leonard Slatkin, the PSO’s Principal Guest Conductor, interprets The Good Life, scored for full orchestra and chorus with baritone and soprano soloists Kevin Deas and Hila Plitmann.
The evening's reflections on a new America continue with the grand and beautiful Symphony No. 9, “From the New World” by Antonín Dvorák. Opening the program is the brilliantly kinetic Slonimsky's Earbox by PSO Composer of the Year John Adams.
The Good Life Pittsburgh 250 PSO commission is made possible by The Heinz Endowments.
