Beethoven's Ninth Symphony April 26-28
|
|
Join the Mendelssohn Choir in closing out the 2012-2013 season with a rousing performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. We will join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Manfred Honeck, in the culmination of the Music of the Spirit Festival. The text of the final movement of the Symphony, "Ode to Joy," celebrates harmony and brotherhood among mankind. The Gift, commissioned by the PSO, in celebration of PSO Board Chair Richard P. Simmons, makes its world premiere this weekend as well.

Music for the Spirit: A Singing City - April 20
|
|
On April 20, the Mendelssohn Choir, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and 2,350 voices from professional choirs, university choirs, high school choirs, religiously-affiliated choirs, and more will open the inaugural Music for the Spirit Festival with a "Singing City"! Led by PSO Music Director Manfred Honeck and performed at the Petersen Events Center on the University of Pittsburgh's campus, this concert promises to be an historic event. Repertoire highlights include Movement 5 of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, as well as the world premiere of a commissioned work by Pittsburgh composer (and Mendelssohn Choir alumnus) Jonny Priano.
Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster's website: $20 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 for children under the age of twelve.

Once again the Mendelssohn Choir invites singers and non-singers to join us in our annual Felix Festival on March 17 at 3pm at Third Presbyterian Church. This year we will be singing Beethoven's most well-known work, "Ode to Joy," as well as pay our respects to St. Patrick by warming up with some Irish ditties. Meet the singers of the Mendelssohn and Junior Mendelssohn Choirs by singing together side-by-side: We'll warm up together, rehearse, and explore this masterpiece. Singers of all ages and abilities are welcome!

The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra cordially invite audiences to attend a 200th birthday celebration for composers Guiseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner! Hosted by the Pittsburgh Opera's Christopher Hahn, PSO Music Director Manfred Honeck will lead the Choir and soloists Simona Šaturová and Gregg Baker in choruses from Aida, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, The Flying Dutchmen, Lohengrin, and Gotterdämmerung. Hear why Verdi and Wagner are as popular with audiences today as they were 150 years ago!

Highmark Holiday Pops - December 20 - 23

Join us and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Daniel Meyer as we celebrate the season with the annual Highmark Holiday Pops! We'll be singing familiar carols, holiday music, and some you might not recognize, that will surely emphasize the holiday spirit. Joined by violinist Jenny Oaks Baker, vocalists Rachel DeShon and Ricky Manning, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, and a special visit by a certain resident of the North Pole, this will be the best holiday celebration in Pittsburgh!

Right in time for the holidays, The Mendelssohn Choir will present A Victorian Holiday to commemorate Charles Dickens' 200th birthday, and to start the season out on the right note. Accompanied by passages from Dickens' works, Music Director Betsy Burleigh will lead the choir in familiar tunes such as "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Silent Night," as well as Ralph Vaughn Williams' classic Fantasia on Christmas. This concert will warm your bones as much as a bowl of wassail! Even Ebenezer Scrooge won't be able to utter a "Bah Humbug!"

Junior Mendelssohn Fall Concert: A Shining Light - November 11

The Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh presents its annual concert on Sunday, November 11 at 4:00PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Junior Mendelssohn, now in its 26th year, will perform Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, as well as two arrangements by Samuel Barber and Morten Lauridson of "...Sure on This Shining Night." The concert will also feature works by Sara Hopkins and James Bassi. Music Director Susan Medley will conduct.
A post-concert reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the concert.

Mahler's Resurrection - October 19
|
|
Join the Mendelssohn Choir and the Pittsburgh Symphony Ochestra led by Maestro Manfred Honeck as we present Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection." Written between 1888 and 1894, this work proclaims Mahler's belief in life after death. "Resurrection" also features Mendelssohn Choir soprano Amelia D'Arcy, and mezzo-soprano Gerhild Romberger. Don't miss this special one-performance presentation!

Honeck Presents Mozart's Requiem - October 12-14
|
|
Once again, the Mendelssohn Choir will be participating in Maestro Manfred Honeck's funeral Mass for Mozart, as the Pittsburgh Symphony presents Mozart's Requiem. Join us for Maestro Honeck's interpretation of Mozart's funeral, narrated by F. Murray Abraham with readings from Scripture, poems, and Mozart's personal letters to his father, as well as Gregorian chant and church bells. Pittsburgh Symphony Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley will also be making his concert debut with Beethoven's Violin Concerto.
