Felix Festival - Handel's Messiah Sing-Along March 11

Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 3:00 pm
Third Presbyterian Church
5701 Fifth Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15232-2799

Messiah in Lent?  But of course!  Even though we now associate the work with the Christmas season, Handel actually wrote it (like all his oratorios) for Lent.  Handel was very active as an opera composer, but opera was too worldly for the time of penitence and reflection, and so the theaters would shut down during Lent.  In response Handel composed oratorios, which were most frequently musical dramatizations of a biblical story, as a way to support himself and his fellow musicians for the six long weeks of Lent.  These were then actually performed in the theaters, but without the extravagant trappings of staging and costumes.  So Lent is actually the proper time to perform Messiah.

For our side-by-side sing-along we'll skip Part 1, which describes the Nativity, and will sing only Part 2, which tells the story of the crucifixion and the resurrection.  But don't worry!  The hit tune from Messiah, the "Hallelujah Chorus", is actually the ending of Part 2, so we will get to sing it.

Volkwein’s Music will provide Messiah scores for the sing-along.  The cost per score will be $10.00. Please call 412-788-5900 Ext. 601 to place your order!

We look forward to singing with you!
