Annelies
How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. –Anne Frank (1929-1945)
ONLINE TICKET SALES WILL CLOSE AT 2PM ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25. TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR.
Hear the innocence and hope in young Anne Frank’s words in Annelies, a full choral work by British composer James Whitbourn with libretto compiled by Melanie Challenger from The Diary of A Young Girl. Soprano soloist Amelia D’Arcy, the Mendelssohn Choir, and instrumentalists give voice to the girl whose emotional story has inspired millions and who remains the most well-known heroine of the Holocaust. Devastatingly beautiful, the music captures Anne’s youthful innocence amid unthinkable hardship.
The World Premiere of the full Annelies was given in April, 2005 by Leonard Slatkin with the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall, London. The chamber version premiered four years later in 2009 in The Hague, The Netherlands. This performance of Annelies will be the Pittsburgh premiere.
This performance of Annelies is not recommended for youths 12 years and younger.
Join MCP soprano Amelia D’Arcy, Pittsburgh-based author Helen-Faye Rosenblum, and Dr. Lauren Bairnsfather, director of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, on January 29 at 3pm at Rodef Shalom for a FREE special event before Annelies, entitled: Anne Frank: The Literary, Historical, & Musical Legacy.
Annelies is sponsored by The Fine Foundation, the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, with media sponsors 90.5 WESA, and WYEP 91.3.
